While it’s not quite a cleaning task, decluttering your closet is still a great target for your seasonal spruce-up. Hopefully the weather is warming up where you are, so you can put away your bulky sweaters and bring the shorts and tank tops out of hibernation.

A Satisfying Deep Dive: Empty the closet completely.

If you’re feeling like you want to go all-in, then everything needs to come out. Pull every item from the closet and set it down on your bed or another surface. I find it helps to keep things grouped together as you set them down—so jeans with jeans, and gym clothes with gym clothes. While the closet’s empty, take a second to vacuum and wipe dust from surfaces.

Go through the items you took out and, one by one, either add them back into the closet, or set them aside to be donated. As you pick each item up, think about if and how you use those items, and make bold cuts where you need to. I find it helps to ask myself: If I was shopping right now, would I buy this? That question seems to help me make better judgments about whether things fit, or if they even suit my style anymore.

A Quick Win: Declutter a few things.

You don’t need to do a complete closet overhaul to declutter. Just first set a small goal in your mind—five things, 10 things—and then pull that many items from your closet to be given away. If you feel great about it, you can try your goal again tomorrow or a week from now.
